YONO Labs, a startup based in Silicon Valley, partnered with Speck Design to create an innovative fertility tracker. The challenge was to design a comfortable, wearable device for overnight use, capable of tracking fertility through body temperature, and featuring a dual-purpose travel case and charging station.
The industrial design of the YONO fertility tracker centered around user comfort, especially during extended periods of wear. Our team conducted comprehensive comfort studies to determine the optimal sizing and materials for the earbud casing. The goal was to create a design that users could comfortably wear all night without disruption. We chose a soft silicone encasement for the earbud, ensuring both comfort and durability. The sleek and intuitive design extended to the travel case, which was crafted to serve a dual purpose as a compact charging station. The final design was not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional, aligning with YONO’s vision of providing a hassle-free fertility tracking solution.
In the electrical engineering phase, our focus was to embed sophisticated tracking technology into the small form factor of the earbud. The challenge was to design a system capable of continuous overnight body temperature monitoring while maintaining a compact and lightweight structure. We developed a solution that could efficiently capture and store temperature data throughout the night. The engineering also included seamless syncing capabilities with smartphones, allowing users to transfer temperature data to the YONO app dashboard effortlessly. This technical achievement was crucial in making the YONO fertility tracker a reliable and user-friendly device.
The mechanical engineering aspect of the YONO fertility tracker was crucial in creating a device that was not only comfortable but also practical for everyday use. We designed the tracker to be easy to charge, with a travel case that functioned efficiently as a charging station. Our team meticulously worked on the internal mechanism to ensure that the tracker would charge reliably and be ready for use every night. We also focused on the mechanical durability of the device, ensuring that it could withstand regular use and handling. The outcome was a mechanically sound product that provided convenience and reassurance to the user.
In designing the packaging for the YONO fertility tracker, we aimed to create an experience that resonated with the user from the first interaction. The packaging was designed to be visually appealing, inviting users to explore the product. We focused on creating a package that was not only attractive but also functional, reflecting the dual nature of the travel case as a charging station. The design communicated the sophistication and innovation of the YONO brand, ensuring that the first impression was impactful and aligned with the product's high-quality standards.
The user research for the YONO fertility tracker involved in-depth studies to understand the specific needs and preferences of women tracking their fertility. Our team engaged with potential users to gather insights on comfort, usability, and functionality requirements. This research was instrumental in guiding the design and engineering process, ensuring that the final product met the actual needs of the users. By focusing on the user experience, we were able to create a product that was not only innovative but also deeply resonated with the target audience.
