Background

The S2 is the world's first wireless video surveillance system for small businesses and residences.  The system consists of 1 to 10 wireless, high resolution, high contrast cameras, and a wireless digital video recorder (DVR).  It is available for home and commercial use and up to 10 remotely located wireless cameras can broadcast live video to a single digital video recorder receiver.  Live or stored images and video streams can be viewed from any Internet browser on any PC.  This breakthrough product allows small business owners to monitor their stores or facilities without being present, from any Internet-connected PC in the world.  The user can mount the cameras anywhere within 400 feet of the DVR, without cabling.  The wireless connection to the DVR saves thousands of dollars in installation costs.  The DVR is typically installed in a closet or next to a PC where there is Internet access.  Homeowners can use the system to monitor the backyard, other rooms, and can view the video on a home PC or from any PC in the world with Internet access.

Challenge

The client's objectives were:

  • Dramatically reduce installation costs for video security systems.
  • Make the visible parts of the system (the cameras) visible but unobtrusive, yet convey a sense that serious video surveillance is underway.
  • Allow users to view video (live or stored) from any location.

Traditionally, security systems are "hard wired" and are not only costly but can take days or weeks to install.  For non-enterprise customers (small retail and residential), these issues are what drive customers away.

Solution

Speck Design's research showed that observers associate a larger lens with higher quality images and better surveillance.  Most people have the experience that tiny lenses (like camera phones) deliver poor images.  Speck Design sought to create a look of authority and uncontested competence in the camera, since that is the only part of the system that observers can see.  We chose to focus attention on the camera's lens, and used a strong cylindrical barrel to emphasize the lens and allude to the very powerful high-performance video chip inside.  Cooling slots are both functional and reminiscent of race car cooling scoops.  The design succeeds at conveying high technology, unobtrusive design, and unquestioned video surveillance capability. 

Results

As a result of the wireless technology, SmartVue S2 reduces the cost, complexity, and time required to install video surveillance.  The IP (Internet protocol) foundation permits viewing the digital images from any Internet-enabled PC anywhere in the world.  The patent-pending technologies automatically locate, optimize data streams, secure data, and manage video storage and remote access.
