Background

Maverick wanted to differentiate themselves by creating a Bluetooth headset that was not so “Star-Trek,” high-tech, and masculine with the elongated shape.  Therefore, Maverick needed to get acoustic isolation between the microphone and speaker

Challenge

The goals of the project were:

• To make it more jewelry-like and appealing and comfortable to women.
• To make it comfortable by not having any piece stuck in your ear.
• To make it left and right-side friendly.
• To make it completely effortless to use in a car: A charger would be in the car that allowed you to plug another item into the lighter rather than just one.  This charger was also paired with the phone so that the Bluetooth headset would work even while charging.

Solution

A flat and round shaped headset (so it can be put into your pocket easily) that accomplishes all of these goals.  Speck Design delivered a research phase that resulted in the circular, boom free shape.  Maverick wanted the headset to feel more like jewelry and be something that was comfortable to wear.  We did studies on the form factor for the ear hook to allow it secure the headset as well as be flexible and comfortable.  We handled all the industrial design for the system as well.  Down to the level of detail like the materials for the headset and hole pattern of the speaker cover.

Results

Nica’s advanced technology is not limited to the headset itself.  Maverick paid attention to how consumers really use Bluetooth headsets, and has designed Nica with innovative ways of charging.  Speck Design’s most significant contributions to the charger are how the headset sits on the charger and that the charger opens to reveal an auxiliary charger for other devices.  Nica attaches magnetically to either the included Desk Dock or the optional Car Dock, for easy cable-less recharging and convenient access.
