Posted by Amanda, brand communications - February 20, 2012

At Speck Design we tend to be fascinated by elegantly designed kitchen appliances, new technology trends, and objects of fancy that provide hours of entertainment, not to mention well-engineered bikes and cars, kids’ toys, and even delicious ice cream toppings.  As part of our “Top 10” series, Speckies share what’s cool, clever, and just neat all around.  Check out what we have to say!

The more into cooking I get, the better kitchen supplies I want!  I am no expert chef − I mostly perform basic tasks when it comes to food preparation.  But, from an ergonomics standpoint, I have learned that sometimes a shorter knife is better, allowing me more control over my knife.  Specially designed handles of certain ergonomic knives add comfort and ease to the job at hand.  Take Guy Fieri’s Ergo Chef knives, not only are they great looking and reasonably priced, but they are of high quality and design.  My new fancy is the chef’s knife, which has exquisite details and offers durability that is sure to make me an at-home chef in no time! My next kitchen supply shopping quest will entail buying ergonomic knives.  Here is my list of top 10 ergonomic kitchen knives.

    1.  Stirex

This ergonomic serrated kitchen knife is designed to involve the use of the larger muscle groups of the forearm and upper arm with its L-shaped handle.  The handle design allows for a strong power grip, which can aid in the reduction of excessive grip force.  They have stainless steel blades and are dishwasher safe.

    2.  Ergo Chef

The Ergo Chef Steak Knife has a D-shaped edge that cuts through the toughest meat.  They are heat treated to stay sharper longer and fully forged for quality and durability.  The one-piece, non-slip handle is guaranteed to never crack, and is dishwasher safe.  These fancy steak knives are only a sample of Ergo Chef’s high-quality knife performance.

    3. Rocking T-Knife

This is the perfect knife for fragile hands.  By simply applying a small amount of pressure to the large wooden handle while rocking back and forth, the blade cuts food easily.  It has a stainless steel 3.5-inch blade that requires less strength and dexterity than other knives.

    4. Tojiro Ergos

Ergonomic Santoku Knives are designed to provide high-dimensional stability and usability with a non-slip grip that reduces physical stress from long-term use.  This is an all-purpose knife used for cutting meat, fish, vegetables and more.  Its high tempered steel blade ensures endurance and maintains sharpness even after being in the dishwasher.

    5. Wüsthof

Each series of these high-precision forged knives have a different ergonomic handle design which offers comfort of all likings.  The curved bolter on this chef’s knife provides soft cutting transitions for balance, and the laser-controlled edge creates consistent angles.  I love the secure, soft touch handle for added grip and stability.

    6.  Zwilling Pure

This knife has a unique geometry for maximizing stability and cutting strength. Each edge has an angle of 15° and a hand polished edge that gives the final finish the ultimate sharpness.  Pressure on the blade and bolster transition seamlessly to the handle for easy control.  Although they are dishwasher safe, it is highly recommended to wash them by hand to ensure the longevity of the knife’s finishes.

    7.  Berghoff

The peeling (top) and tomato (bottom) knives are two examples of high quality stainless steel blades for unique purposes.  They have ergonomically designed handles for safe handling and are satin hand-finished for extremely sharp superior cutting.  Hand wash recommended.

    8.  Kyocera

The Kyocera paring knife is ground with microscopic precision by diamond wheels, which are used as part of the finishing process.  Its strength and density comes from its ceramic material that results in razor-sharp cuts that lasts 10 times longer than steel knives.

    9. Elderluxe

These knives have soft-touch molded plastic grips for a comfortable non-slip, worry-free use.  All of their stainless steel blades are set at an 86° angle, keeping the hand and wrist in a neutral, stress-free position.

    10.  Henckels

The 6” chef’s knife features a high-precision stainless steel blade and an extra heavy bolster.  The knife has a molded polypropylene handle that is designed to fit both hands, and alleviates stress despite the weight of the bolster.
