Background

Tursiogear, which sells cases for personal media players, partnered with Speck Design to further develop its original concept for an iPod case while ensuring differentiation of their product in a pre-existing market.  From the initial concepts and preliminary hand-crafted models, our designers and engineers were responsible for transforming the ideas into an intuitive end product.

Challenge

In developing the iPod case, there were several product requirements:

  • Stylish, clean, and sleek
  • Elegant and Iconic
  • Customizable (shells, skins, faceplates)
  • Durable, reliable, and high quality
  • Designed to fit both 30 and 60 gigabyte models

Solution

Speck Design initiated the design process with brainstorms to come up with numerous ideas for refining the iPod case.  Concepts for refinement included: a built-in USB cable that can retract and be stored within the case, the ability to use interchangeable outlet plugs, the use of a compressible material to fit different iPod models, a tiltable dock connector for easy iPod connection, all while containing the smallest possible power circuitry.  Keeping all of these conditions in mind, we developed the “Portago iPod Smart Case.”

Results

Through the “Portago Smart Case” the 5G iPod can be connected to a variety of output devices.  Our resulting design allows users to share video, photo, and music content on the iPod with others.  The multi-functioning case and dock system comes with an infrared remote so that the user can control the iPod from a distance.  Another convenient feature of the all-in-one “Portago Smart Case” is its durability.  Not to mention, the case serves as both a charging and syncing dock, a player, and also protects the iPod.  The case also comes with an electrical outlet so that the iPod can be charged while still in its case, thereby avoiding the need to remove it from its case while charging.  Although Tursiogear originally targeted road warriors and college students, the end product was also ideal for families and iPod enthusiasts.

With Speck Design’s understanding of product differentiation, the Portago case was an innovative product in a pre-existing market, making it a standout success among its competitors.
